The Statue of Liberty is a landmark of New York. After the Orbs's invasion, the Orb Alliance removed its torch, and converted the "arm" to a chimney pumping red fumes to breathe more comfortably, and also make the humans stupid and sluggish, much like Coit Tower in San Francisco. It also housed a radar and anti-air defense systems.
The Underground discovered its operation and led a plan to steal an Orb ship and destroy the Statue; this objective was communicated in the Datacard, but they failed. The Manhunter followed their traces and discovered the Orbs's sinister operations in the main terminal of the Alliance Computer in the Empire State Building; disabling its defenses, he bombed the Statue with a hijacked Orb ship.
